Two terms you will commonly encounter are radial pressure-wave therapy and focused shockwave therapy. They work differently, so understanding that distinction is a useful starting point.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy applies mechanically generated acoustic energy from outside the body. Different systems deliver energy differently, so “shockwave therapy” should not be treated as one uniform intervention.

ESWT has established and emerging uses across musculoskeletal medicine and other specialties, but evidence strength varies by condition and protocol. Regulatory indications are device- and jurisdiction-specific.

Radial and focused are not interchangeable terms

Radial pressure-wave devices generally deliver maximum energy near the skin and disperse it with depth; focused systems concentrate energy into a defined target area.
